“Over the next few months, Portlanders will have plenty of opportunities to walk through the red door, metaphorically speaking, during the August Wilson Red Door Festival, a series of performances, exhibitions and public forums inspired by the work of the late, great dramatist. It’s the first major initiative in what the Red Door Project, in a press release, calls an effort ‘to use the arts as a catalyst for creating a lasting, positive change in the racial ecology of Portland’ — that is, how race factors into the organization of institutions and activities in the community, how it affects access to resources and opportunities.”

That’s not a quick-fix agenda. The Red Door Project is about initiating conversations and collaborations, and the festival takes a variety of approaches to that.
